Steep Canyon Rangers Brought Down the House

Thursday, December 12, 2019

Grammy Award-winning Steep Canyon Rangers ignited the Lund Auditorium on Saturday, January 11. The band, which has performed frequently with musician/comedian Steve Martin, is touring behind its current album, North Carolina Songbook.

Steep Canyon Rangers has epitomized the rebirth of the American bluegrass movement since forming in 2000 at the University of North Carolina. Connecting the past with the present and blurring any boundaries between them, the band attracted the attention of Steve Martin, who recruited the band to accompany him on a worldwide bluegrass tour in 2009. They also opened and provided accompanying music for "An Evening You Will Never Forget," Martin's live performances with Martin Short.

With Martin, the band performed on "A Prairie Home Companion" and "Austin City Limits" and recorded albums including Rare Bird Alert (2010), with guest vocals by Paul McCartney and the Dixie Chicks, and The Long-Awaited Album (2017).

In 2011, Steep Canyon Rangers and Steve Martin were jointly named "Entertainers of the Year" at the IBMA Awards in Nashville, TN. The group's 2013 album, Nobody Knows You, received the Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album. Their 2018 album, Out in the Open, was made with legendary producer Joe Henry (Rodney Crowell, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Solomon Burke), and garnered a Grammy Award nomination. The band's current album, North Carolina Songbook, hit #1 on the Billboard Bluegrass chart.
