DACA students' future hinges on an argument about procedure

Monday, November 11, 2019

Dominican student Junior Mares was featured in an article in Education Dive, a national online education publication, about the future of DACA. The Supreme Court heard oral arguments about the possible repeal of DACA on November 12 and may make a decision this coming spring or summer.

Mares is a sophomore majoring in computer science. He was brought to the U.S. from Mexico when he was three years old and signed up for DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) as a teenager.

The end of DACA would have dire circumstances for young people as well as for the universities who enroll them. According to the article, more than 120,000 of the 700,000 DACA recipients were enrolled in some form of post-secondary education as of September 2017.
