Alumnus Mike Carmody Featured as One of "Chicago's Very Own"

Thursday, August 1, 2019

Mike Carmody, MSPED '08, and his brother Phil were featured in a segment on WGN-TV's Chicago's Very Own program. The brothers founded Opportunity Knocks ten years ago to offer programs for people with disabilities. They were inspired by their younger brother, John, who has Down Syndrome, and concerned by his lack of opportunities as he approached adulthood. They created a day program called Life Shop, focusing on job training and other life skills.

The Carmody brothers also launched a social enterprise called Knock Out Pickles, making and jarring pickles and selling them to nearby restaurants. They also maintain a catering business.
