Follow Cristal Ortega's cross country progress!

Tuesday, July 11, 2017

Cristal Ortega and her team have made it through the Rockies where Cristal experienced what she claims has been her proudest moment--yet--on the ride. She biked the Trail Ridge Road, the tallest paved road in the US, with a peak of 12,160 feet, on July 11 and passed through the Continental Divide on July 12. She celebrated the accomplishment with a snowball fight--in July.

"After the Rockies and Trail Ridge Road, I know that I can accomplish anything that I put my mind to. You just gotta remember to keep the faith," she wrote on her Facebook page.

That faith was tested when Cristal took a nasty tumble on some railroad tracks on Day 40--July 13. After some rest and healing, she's back up and at it and is heading into Thistle, Utah on Monday, July 17. Tomorrow she and the team have a rest day in Salt Lake City.

A recent Dominican University alumna and cancer survivor, Cristal is doing a cross-country bike trek to San Franciso to raise funds for cancer research and to deliver cancer kits to young adults in hospitals across the country. She left Baltimore on Sunday, June 4. You can read more about her amazing story in a Chicago Tribune profile here or through this Univision video (in Spanish).

The team is scheduled to arrive in San Francisco on August 12. You can follow Cristal's progress through the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults 4K For Cancer website.

Godspeed, Cristal!
