The Dominican University department of athletics hosted more than 80 guests from Special Olympics Illinois and District 99 for a day of fun as part of the NCAA Division III partnership with Special Olympics.
The day kicked off with a game between a pair of teams out of Community High School District 99 from Downers Grove. Players got the chance to play at Dominican's Igini Sports Forum in front of fans including 200-plus of Dominican University's own student-athletes.
"Today's event was really exciting for all of our athletes," commented Dominican University women's basketball coach Gabby Johnson who worked to organize the event.
"The department may have done the planning for today, but the experience was taken to a new level by Dominican University's student-athletes. We simply asked them to show up but they came with an excitement and energy that made today truly memorable for our guests from District 99."
Following the game, Dominican University's department of athletics provided pizza and refreshments for the Special Olympians and their guests before inviting them to Dominican's own Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) men's and women's basketball doubleheader.
"With the current social climate, we can all stand to learn something from these two groups of athletes—Dominican University's and Special Olympics Illinois. The pure enthusiasm and enjoyment for the success of others in the gymnasium today was quite refreshing," continued Johnson.
